Coaching refers to a method of training, counselling or instructing an individual or a group how to develop skills to enhance their productivity or overcome a performance problem. The supervisor is called a coach while the learner is called the coachee.
Coaching methods and models generally include close observation, accountability and feedback on progress and performance.
Coaching process
Coaches have expressed analytical and interpersonal skills. There are two types of coaching:
- Internal coaching is done within the organization, where a manager acts as coach for the team he/she already knows.
- External coaching is done where the coach is not a part of the organization or the line management structure, but he/she is an expert in the field in which coaching is being given.
